Dampers are used to regulate or stop the flow of air through a duct or opening. There are several different types:
Volume control dampers (VCDs) are used to regulate the airflow in a branch duct during normal operation. Manually adjusted VCDs have a simple knob or lever and are generally used for balancing airflow during commissioning and are not subsequently adjusted. Motorised VCDs are normally part of an automatic control system to either modulate the airflow in a part of the system according to demand, or to shut off a part of the system when not in use. VCDs can take the form of a simple flap on a single pivot, or multiple blades operated simultaneously via a gear or lever linkage system.
Fire dampers or fire-smoke dampers are designed to shut off a duct in the event of a fire, to stop the fire spreading from one area to another via the duct. The most common type has a spring loaded metal curtain device which is released by a fusible link when exposed to high temperatures.
Fairhaven are distributors for both NCA and BSB dampers. We carry stocks of common sizes of Fire Dampers and Volume Control Dampers, and non-stocked sizes are usually available within 3-5 days of ordering.
