Fairhaven H&V Services are proud to have completed their first installation of Monodraught Windcatcher natural ventilation systems. The state of the art “X-Air” systems were supplied and installed at a new sports hall facility for the University of Ireland Maynooth Campus, near Dublin.
The WINDCATCHER X-Air is a 2nd generation natural ventilation system featuring Monodraught’s patented ACTIVLOUVRE® modulating aerofoil louvre technology. The system consists of an external static louvre and internal active louvre arrangement, which varies the opening and free area through the louvre face. The variable louvres can provide maximum ventilation rates when fully open or modulated to increase louvre pressure or closed to prevent the ingress of precipitation.
In addition to the ACTIVLOUVRE arrangement, the X-air unit also incorporates external air catchment fins to provide greater area at the louvre improving performance in relation to wind speed. Pressure release vanes at the fins provide a means to reduce face pressure under high winds.
Two X-air “Solaboost” 170 units were supplied, along with Monodraught’s own INVent intelligent controls package. The X-air Solaboost units are a mechanically assisted version of the standard X-air unit. A low voltage axial fan connected to a central core provides intake or extract air (intake as standard), powered by solar panels situated at within the system capping. The system is designed to provide additional airflow when it is needed most, i.e. on summer days with light winds. Since no mains power is used to run the fan, there are no additional running costs. In order to maximise the performance of the fan, the system utilises the PowerTrack™ control system, which optimises the solar panel output to provide a smooth current and hence steady fan flow.
As Monodraught’s partners for all of Ireland, Fairhaven were involved in the project from the design & specification stage all the way through to the installation and commissioning. This “full service” approach is one of the key aspects of the Monodraught ethos, and is an important factor in delivering a natural ventilation solution that performs as intended.
